Rovers pummel Rhinos to claim title

2012-07-25 00:00

COLLEGE Rovers claimed their seventh consecutive Premier Division title when they beat the Zululand Rhinos 53-3 after a somewhat scratchy start at Mick Kelly Park in Empangeni.

Durban Collegians were hoping that Rovers would fail to pick up the four-try bonus point which would keep their hopes alive but KZN’s perennial champions turned a shaky 12-3 lead at the break into a second-half rout.

Rovers eventually scored eight tries with the Vryheid express Jors Dannhauser crossing for two while wings Anton Verster and Rosco Speckman, centres Nic Jackson and Jean Botha, hooker Chris Kemp and their ever-present flank Kosie Haarhoff scored the other touchdowns.

Dannhauser converted seven of their eight tries for a personal tally of 24 points ending up as the top try-scorer and points-scorer in the competition with a game in hand.

That game this Saturday, which will be at home against their arch-rivals and neighbours Durban Collegians, will be a fitting finale to the league.

Both Pietermaritzburg clubs went down.

Maritzburg Collegians were beaten 58-11 by Durban Collegians while Varsity College will finish in third spot on the Premier Division log table after beating the Maritzburg Varsity students 27-15.

Rovers second stringers won the Premier Division Reserve league by thumping Rhinos 79-0, leaving them the only unbeaten side in both the Premier and Premier Reserve leagues.

The draw for the Murray Cup knockout competition took place on Monday evening. The innovative programme involves the First Division clubs from the North and South Sections who will all have home ground advantage in the opening round on August 4.

The 2011 champions College Rovers drew Piet Retief while Durban Collegians were a little more fortunate being drawn to face Ballito Dolphins. Maritzburg Varsity will travel to Vryheid, Durban Varsity will host Crusaders, Harlequins will visit Newcastle to face the Highlanders, Toti will entertain Maritzburg Collegians and Varsity College travel to Port Shepstone to meet South Coast Warriors.

The University of Kwa-Zulu-Natal have a crucial game on Saturday when they host the tough North-West University (Vaal Triangle) in the University Shield playoff match. The match kicks off at 2.50 pm and club officials are hoping a large crowd will be present.

North-West University are currently tied fifth (alongside Pukke) in the Top 15 “Super League” which involves the top eight Gauteng Lions clubs, together with the five best Valke clubs and the two top North-West Province (Leopards) clubs. The Super League is considered one of SA’s toughest club competitions.

Three flat-screen TVs will show the Sharks-Stormers semi-final which will follow the big game on the local Varsity campus.

There has been a time change to Maritzburg Collegians’ Moor Cup outing at Woodburn Stadium on Saturday. This match will now kick off at 2.30 pm with the Reserve League at 1 pm.
