“THE spirit of Comrades has been reignited,” says John Cameron-Dow, author of Comrades Marathon, The Ultimate Human Race, published two weeks ahead of the epic road race tomorrow.

He said that when the race first opened up to foreign runners after apartheid, those who came were in it for the money “evidence that the spirit we had grown to know and love was fading.

“But now they run mid-pack, tail-end and up-front — they are here to partake in that magic, it’s back and stronger than ever before.”

Cameron-Dow has written a biography of Comrades legend Bruce Fordyce and books on the Two Oceans Marathon.

“I was approached by the Comrades Marathon Association to put together this all-encompassing book. I’ve covered the race since its inception till now,” he said.

“There is nothing more unifying than struggle, and I recall the time when student Bruce Fordyce and other runners his age wore black armbands in direct defiance of apartheid.”

Cameron-Dow said almost one million people are expected on the sidelines in this “ultimate human race”.

The book sells for R285 and is already on the best seller list in Gauteng.
