'Royal' Midmar Mile: princess-to-be will compete

2011-01-27 00:00

THE future Princess of Monaco and former South African Olympic swimmer Charlene Wittstock has confirmed that she will be participating in this year’s 38th aQuelle Midmar Mile competition, the organisers said yesterday.

Wittstock will be accompanied by the former German Olympian Franziska van Almsick who won her first Olympic medal at the 1992 Barcelona games at just 14 years old. She and Wittstock will swim together in the opening race. Race director Wayne Riddin said this year’s race, scheduled for the weekend of February 12 and 13, has been buoyed by a large number of international swimmers.

He said the swimming event has been billed as a royal occasion because of Wittstock, and Almsick’s presence had attracted a large contingent of international swimmers, media and spectators.

Other high-profile figures who will be attending the event are Lewis Pugh, the British environmental campaigner, swimmer, maritime lawyer and motivational speaker often referred to as a “human polar bear”.
