Royal Show: Big numbers expected as some activities start today

2009-05-22 00:00

THIS year’s Royal Agricultural Show will be one of the busiest in many years with both the usual cattle and sheep competitions and classes for commercial breeding heifers, for both dairy and beef breeds, on the second weekend of the show.

The sheep section will see two national competitions — for the Hampshire Downs and Suffolks — and Terry Strachan, general manager of the Royal Agricultural Society reports that there has been an increase in the number of Merino breeders participating in the show.

Apart from livestock on the hoof, the Royal Show, under the watchful eye of Sotuh African Meat Industry Company, will host the carcass auction on May 27. Two years ago the event set an all-time world record when R3 000 per kilogram was realised for the winning lamb carcass.

Most South African implement and tractor manufacturers and distributors will also be represented and if 2008 is anything to go by, reasonable sales are expected, this despite the current economic climate.
