THE Royal Show wrapped up with a flourish on Sunday with the Ukhozi FM Concert and organisers are already preparing for Royal Show 2012.

This year’s attendance at the 10-day Royal Show grew to 149 031 people from 146 031 in 2010.

Terrence Strachan, the Royal Agricultural Society of Natal chief executive, said some 25 000 people attended the Ukhozi FM Concert.

“Both weekends of the Royal Show continued to incorporate a significant entertainment component,” Strachan added.

There were 2 000 animals on show from when the annual event kicked off until June 4, and breeders and farmers from as far afield as Western Cape took part.

The carcass auction, which is regarded as the country’s premier red meat event with 300 buyers and breeders participating, saw good prices being realised

“There is little doubt that the Royal Show is today the primary conduit for exhibition grade livestock and is certainly the largest mixed agricultural show in Africa, catering for livestock and equipment,” said Strachan.

Pietermaritzburg’s annual event also received wide media coverage and appeared on national television on two occasions.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Joey Jeevan said 11 cases, including theft and assault with intention of bodily harm, were reported during the Ukhozi FM Concert.

“We’ve had five arrests for theft and assault cases,” said Jeevan.

However, Strachan said the audience was well behaved, as has been the case in past years, and that a good time was had by all.
