Royal show makes space for more rides, falls and extreme wipe-outs

ROYAL Show organisers are taking it to another level this year by doubling the size of the fairground for the show’s 160th anniversary.

Five new fairground attractions will be added.

According to the chief executive officer (CEO) of the Royal Agricultural Society of Natal Terrence Strachan, the show has made an additional piece of ground available to restore the fairground to its former glory.

“The public enjoy the rides,” he told The Witness.

Amongst many rides people will enjoy is the twin ranger, an extreme thrill ride where participants revolve in a capsule some 30 metres off the ground, and the free fall machine, where 16 riders are hoisted into the sky and experience a 20-metre free fall.

The fun house has made it onto the list as well, and it is the only one of its kind in South Africa, Strachan said “with different obstacles to go through turning barrels and moving stairs”.

The show takes place at the Royal Showgrounds from May 27 to June 5.

The CEO said the show will also have the largest fireworks display in KwaZulu-Natal.

“The funfair will be open to the public from 9 am to 10 pm from Sunday to Thursday and to 11:30 pm on Fridays and Saturdays,” he added.
