Royals humiliate Super Kings

2015-04-20 00:00

SHANE Watson and Ajinkya Rahane humiliated the Chennai Super Kings in their IPL encounter with an opening stand of 144, setting up an eight-wicket win for the Rajasthan Royals, with 10 balls remaining, in Ahmedabad yesterday.

Watson, in his first match after recovering from a hip injury, smashed 73 off 47 balls, with six fours and four sixes, while Rahane went on unbeaten to 76, off 55 balls (6x4, 2x6), chasing the woefully inadequate target of 157 to win. Just one single run, a wide, came from extras.

They looked as if they would go all the way, until Ravindra Jadeja, the left-arm spinner snuck one under Watson’s bat in the 17th over. By then just 12 runs were needed at just over three an over. The loss of Steve Smith, caught and bowled by Dwayne Brave for six, merely delayed proceedings.

The Kings were helpless in the face of a controlled and measured partnership. The openers were always ahead of the asking rate of 7,8, taking 47 off the powerplay and needing just 40 balls for the first 50. Then the light turned green and they powered through to the hundred off another 29 balls. That effectively closed the game out. Bravo and captain MS Dhoni were the driving force behind the Kings’ effort. They put on 91 after some astute bowling changes by captain Watson, who had lost the toss and been sent in to the field, had them struggling at 68 for four at the halfway stage.
