Rugby: Glenwood, College game could be a cracker

2011-08-06 00:00

THE school rugby season in KZN comes to an end this afternoon on Dixons at Glenwood where the home side play Maritzburg College. This is a fitting finale to the season with arguably the two top sides in the province in action.

Glenwood have one more game, but it is away in Bloemfontein against Grey College. Maritzburg College play their last match in a season in which they have produced some scintillating rugby, but also some very ordinary play.

The first match between College and Glenwood was on Goldstones on the College Reunion Day, and it was a classic with plenty of excitement, good hard rugby and good sportsmanship. Glenwood won the game by a point when a conversion that was missed in the last minute would have given College victory.

Today is the Glenwood Old Boys’ Reunion Day and the home side will be looking to win the double. Glenwood will be motivated by their Old Boys and playing their last match on Dixons. College will be equally up to the occasion as they will want to reverse the first result and it is their last match of the 2011 season.

Glenwood and College have both lost against Affies over the last two weekends, but it was the Durban boys who put Affies under more pressure in their match last Saturday. At the same time College were losing against Pretoria BHS in Pretoria in a game they should have won.

If the College players do not lift their game today then it should be a win for the home side. If College play to their potential then it will be another humdinger.
