Rugby festivals abound

2011-04-19 00:00

THE coming Easter weekend is traditionally the time of rugby and hockey festivals around the country.

A number of festivals have already been held, but some of the KwaZulu-Natal schools will be playing at one of the festivals which starts on Thursday.

In Johannesburg there are the festivals at St Stithians, in their 28th annual festival, King Edward and St Johns. There is also the Kearsney festival which is in its fourth year.

KZN schools will be represented at the rugby and hockey festivals at King Edwards and at St Stithians. At St Johns, where the rugby festival is in its 16th year, there are only two KZN primary schools playing, but no high schools.

Cordwalles and Clifton Prep will be playing at St Johns.

At the Kearsney Rugby Festival there are the hosts and Glenwood. At the King Edward VII School (Kes) Festival, Durban High School and Westville will be playing. These two KZN sides were at the Grey High School Festival in Port Elizabeth at the beginning of the Easter holidays and DHS in particular will hope that they have a more successful set of games than in Port Elizabeth. This will be difficult however, as they meet KES, St Albans and Jeppe.

Westville have arguably slightly easier fixtures than they had at Grey.

The three schools they play are St Andrews, Eldoraigne and Banca Montepaschi from Italy.

Northwood is the sole KZN school at the St Stithians festival. They will be severely tested by St Stithians, Wynberg and Queens.

Clifton and Michaelhouse will both be playing at the hockey festival at St Stithians. This festival has both boys’ and girls’ schools represented.

The other boys’ schools that are playing are the hosts St Stithians, Windhoek from Namibia, Parktown, St Johns and Falcon from Zimbabwe.

At the Kes Hockey Festival, KZN schools playing are Hilton, DHS and Westville.

The other schools at this festival are KES, Jeppe, Affies, St Davids, St Benedicts, St Albans, Rondebosch, Grey High School, Queens, and Bishops.

St Charles, after playing at St Stithians last year, have returned to the Krugersdorp Rugby Festival, where the games they will play are not as demanding as at St Stithians. The hockey side travel to the festival at St Davids.
