Rugby lovers in for a treat with 10 matches at Wildeklawer fest

2013-04-23 00:00

RUGBY lovers in the area are in for a treat in 10 days’ time when the Wildeklawer Top Schools rugby Festival is held at Maritzburg College.

This is in part celebration of the College 150th anniversary.

There are 10 matches on each of the two days of the festival starting next Thursday and continuing that Saturday.

There are 18 top sides, of which 15 are ranked in the top 30 in the country.

There are two composite sides, one being the Wildeklawer XV and the other the Sharks Academy XV.

The only three teams that presently are not in the top 30 are Glenwood, a team likely to be in the top 30 before too long, Framesby and Diamantveld, the latter close to the top 30.

The top six schools are Outeniqua, Affies, Paarl Gym, Grey College, Monument and EG Jansen and they will all be playing. Other schools and present rankings are Waterkloof (9), Paarl BHS (10), Noordkaap (16), Oakdale (17), HTS Drostdy (19), Paul Roos (20), Grey HS (22), Maritzburg College (26) and Boland Landbou (30).

The games will start early with the first at 7.50 am on Goldstones with the last at 4 pm on the two days.

There will also be two matches on the B field each day.

The rankings will mean little when two sides run onto the field and they are used merely to represent that most of the cream of schoolboy rugby teams in the country will be at this festival. With it being in KZN, it is a pity thet the top-ranked KZN school Kearsney, will not be present.

Each school will bring with them enthusiastic fans, mainly parents and some games will be televised.

Fixtures will be published next week.
