Rugby well worth taking a gander on College fields

2011-04-02 00:00

THE fourth annual Skonk Nicholson Festival kicks off on four fields at Maritzburg College this morning. For the casual visitor some top class age-group rugby will be the order of the day, with plenty to eat and drink around Goldstones.

At last year’s festival there were three unbeaten sides at under 15 level and all three are playing in the under 16 age group this year. Most of the under 16 games are being played on Goldstones.

King Edwards from Johannesburg, one of the unbeaten teams, will be playing Kearsney and this should be a great game at 10.30 am.

Following at 11.30 am is the game between Westville, the second of the unbeaten teams, and Hudson Park from East London. At 12.30 pm the third unbeaten team from Maritzburg College will be playing Menlopark from Pretoria. Keep a look out for the fixtures these teams will be playing on Monday and Tuesday.

Most of the under 15 matches will be played on Snows, the field below Goldstones.

The only unbeaten team at under 14 level that will be playing again is that of the hosts, who face Benoni on Snows today at 1.30 pm. The visitors are playing for the first time at this festival and they are sure to want to make an impression.

Most of the under 14 matches are across College road on Nicholsons (a ground named after Skonk shortly after his retirement in 1982). Any matches that involve Westville, Grey College or Maritzburg College at this level will be worth watching.

It is not often that so many games take place within a stone’s throw of one another and for the rugby-lover, the festival will prove worthwhile taking a gander.
