Rumours link Johnson to Pirates’ job

2014-12-09 00:00

CAPE TOWN — After being spotted at the Soweto Derby, speculation is mounting that Cavin Johnson could be in line to take over the head coaching role at Orlando Pirates.

According to KickOff, Johnson has attempted to distance himself from the rumours after he was spotted watching the Sea Robbers take on Kaizer Chiefs at the weekend. The ex-SuperSport United manager insists he was at the FNB Stadium to watch the game like the rest of the sold-out crowd.

“There were a lot of other people who were also there and I was part of the huge crowd that attended,” said Johnson.

Rumours suggest that Johnson was seen speaking to Pirates’ officials and to former Bucs’ player Helman Mkhalele, but Johnson insists he spoke to Mkhalele about the game and as a spectator.

The 56-year-old manager was the head coach of Platinum Stars before replacing Gavin Hunt as boss at SuperSport United.

Johnson and SuperSport parted ways at the end of August after a poor start to the 2014/15 PSL season.

Johnson was linked to the AmaZulu job before Steve Barker was announced as coach of the Durban side.
