Runners game for Mkhuze

2008-08-08 00:00

IT is a busy racing weekend around the province with one of the most unique and popular game park runs being held tomorrow morning.

Pongola Athletic are hosts for the annual Mkuze Game Park 10 miler (16,1 kilometres) from the Hlambanyathi boma at 7 am. The boma is located just north of Mkuze village on the N2. Despite its distance from Durban and short six-year history, many runners turn this into an annual weekend away.

The out-and-back lapped course gently undulates its way around the game park. Accommodation is available at a number of local establishments and the post-event hospitality is legendary, with game drives on offer.

The three-dimensional medals are among the best in the province and change each year to depict an animal from the park.

Walkers are welcome with a very lenient three-and-a-half hour cut-off time. For more details, phone Arnold Freese at 082 894 8152.

Chatsworth Athletics are organising the Women in Action 10 km race as part of tomorrow’s Women’s Day celebration. The event is down for an 8.30 am start in fixture lists, although it is best to confirm with Dees Govender at 083 785 4333, as the last announcement from the KwaZulu-Natal Athletics office suggests a 6 am start from Chatsworth Stadium.

Taking into account the number of steep hills in the suburb, fast times are unlikely. The event traditionally attracts many unlicensed runners and walkers and there are many awards for finishers.

Sunday’s major event is the Gate Rite Challenge hosted by Verulam Athletics and offering four events. The 50 km ultra is restricted to walkers, while the half-marathon, 10 km and five kilometre are open to both runners and walkers.

The 50 km counts as a qualifier for the 2009 Comrades Marathon. The three longer events commence from the Verulam Recreational Ground at 6 am, while the five-kilometre starts at 9 am.

The usual category prize money is on offer for 50 km walkers, with similar awards made to both walkers and runners in the half-marathon as well as the top three open finishers and juniors in the 10 km event.

The ultra route takes walkers through towards Umdloti before descending down the old North Coast Road to La Mercy. The route then turns inland to Tongaat and returns back to Verulam. For more information, phone Satish Ramsavak at 083 744 2430.

Also on Sunday, the KwaMashu Athletic Club are scheduled to host their 15 km race starting from the KwaMashu Shopping Centre at 6 am. For more information, phone Mr Ngubane at 083 315 6165 or 031 503 4711.
