Running: Prodigal comes home in ronnie

2010-01-12 00:00

MR PRICE’S Prodigal Khumalo started his season with a bang, outkicking club-mate Professor Mollen to take honours in the 32nd Ronnie Davel Memorial.

The duo broke free from the field, opening a 500 metres gap on Khulakhani Mgubane by the finish. Khumalo crossed the line in 53 minutes 37 seconds with Mollen only 30 metres off the pace. Mgubane of Collegians Harriers was third in 55:20.

Kerry Koen won the ladies’ race, leaving Carey-Ann Smith 300 metres adrift to take the tape in one hour nine minutes and 15 seconds. Smith managed 71:03. Third place went to last year’s winner, Janene Carey of the Boxer club, in 72:59.

One of the top age group performances came from Jan Koegenberg, competing in the 50-59 age category, who ran 68:41, seven seconds faster than Westville’s Cliffy Robertze, who led the 40-49 category home.

Yvonne Irmscher finished the walking race in 1,48:47, taking ladies’ line honours, and the 40-49 age category — almost three minutes faster than Eugene Johannes in 1,51:34.
