Rural area employment: Radebe launches job creation programme

MEC for Agriculture and Environmental Affairs Dr Meshack Radebe officially launched a programme to create 28 000 temporary jobs to benefit people in rural areas across KwaZulu-Natal.

The launch, held at the Royal Showgrounds yesterday, is part of the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP).

Radebe also used the launch to show off the Kamoso award, a national award that was given to the department in the category Best Province in the Environment and Culture Sector by the National Department of Public Works.

The award is aimed at recognising and rewarding excellence in the implementation of the


Radebe said the programme he was launching aimed to create employment in the rural areas and wouold target amakhosi across KZN to identify 60 people in each area to work in the programme for the next two years.

He said that after two years people would have been empowered to continue working intheir jobs, open their own businesses or find other jobs with the experience they had received while working on this programme.

He said they would be looking for 33 women, 24 youths and one disabled person in each of the amakhosi areas.

By the end of this year about 28 000 jobs would have been filled, said the MEC.

In each rural area the 60 people would be allocated a portion of land to care for, prevent land- slides, clean up litter and maintain gardens.
