Rural horse racing: Event draws large crowd

2011-11-15 00:00

THE Sisonke Summer Cup rural horse race was held at Kilmon near Bulwer in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands at the weekend.

The trotting race is one of two popular provincial rural horse racing events under the auspices of the Department of Sport and Recreation. The other is the Dundee July event.

Self-taught riders from all over the province rode their ordinary horses for a share in the R60 000 stake. The horse riding event is not only a form of entertainment for scores of spectators, but it is also an economic boost to the local economy as it provides many local vendors with an opportunity to sell their goods that range from food stuffs to art works.

The stakeholders are also working on plans to bolster the initiative into a major tourist attraction.
