SA BMX Champs in Durban

2008-03-22 00:00

It’s the newest and most exciting Olympic sport and this weekend BMX racing brings its fast-paced, colourful, thrill-a-minute action to Durban at the first three rounds of the 2008 MTN South African Championship Series.

More than 200 of the country’s top racers will gather at the Giba Gorge Bike Park just outside Pinetown to do battle for podiums, national ranking points and provincial pride.

This is the first major race meeting to be held at the Giba Gorge track, a relatively fast track by virtue of it being built on a gradual slope.

Interestingly, the sport’s biggest names among the Elite Men are currently competing internationally and will miss the first event in the national championship series, opening the door for a new crop of riders.

Local hero Deon Mulder (Cycle Crazy), Craig Eustace (Intense) and Brett Becker (Jeep) lead the charge for the title.

Other riders on the start list are Teagan O’Keefe (Team Red) in the 15-year Expert, Kyle Dodd (Intense) in the 14-year Expert, and the Eggar siblings, Kayla (11-year Expert) and Dylan (9-year Expert). Round 1 of the national championship starts at 10 pm today with Round 2 kicking off at 1.30 pm. Round 3 begins at 9 am tomorrow.
