SA, India link marked by Twenty20

2010-11-26 00:00

THE historic Twenty20 international between South Africa and India at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on January 9 next year is shaping up to be a lot more than just a bit of hit and giggle.

The match itself will be a final playing farewell for Proteas legend Makhaya Ntini, but also a tribute to Indian mega-star Sachin Tendulkar.

The day will also see South Africa’s original tourists to India — the side led by Clive Rice — feted by Cricket South Africa (CSA).

A Bollywood concert, headlined by the incomparable Shah Rukh Khan, will round off proceedings.

Adding to the Indian flavour, Anil Kapoor — who stars as a talk-show host in hit movie Slumdog Millionaire — will be the MC during the concert.

Speaking at the iconic Durban World Cup venue yesterday, CSA chief Gerald Majola said they had decided to mark the 150th anniversary of Indians settling in South Africa by hosting the match in the city where they first arrived by boat, and where they claim the largest diaspora in the country today.

The day itself has been dubbed as “New Age Friendship Celebration”, with the new, government-backed publication lending its weight to the festivities.

Tickets range from R100 for disadvantaged communities, R350-R400 for stadium seats and up to R2 200 for VIP packages.
