SA Roadlink: Burning bus ‘unforeseen’

2009-03-10 00:00

SA Roadlink said the latest incident on a KZN road involving one of their buses, which burnt to a shell while en route to Johannesburg, was completely “unforeseen”, especially since the bus was passed in recent roadworthiness tests.

Roadlink general manager Herman Steyn said the bus passed numerous roadworthiness tests before it took to the road. Therefore, the “unfortunate fire that destroyed the luxury coach” was unpredictable.

“The coach in question was one of more than 50 that were recently endorsed as fully roadworthy during SA Roadlink’s fleet-wide voluntary testing exercise,” said Steyn. “The coach had also been inspected during two mandatory pre-trip inspections before leaving both Johannesburg and Umtata.”

The Witness reported on Monday that a Roadlink bus had caught alight while travelling through the Umkomaas Valley on Friday night. The bus was carrying passengers at the time, but none were injured.

Although The Witness reported that the fire was caused by a tyre blow-out, Steyn said the cause was an electrical fault.
