SA Roadlink breakdown: passengers hitch-hike after being stranded for an hour

2010-06-29 00:00

PASSENGERS resorted to hitchhiking yesterday afternoon after being stranded “in the wilderness” for over an hour due to technical problems with an SA Roadlink bus.

The bus broke down near the Tugela Plaza on a trip from Gauteng to Pietermaritzburg and Durban. An outraged passenger, who asked not to be named, said passengers had resorted to hitchhiking and getting lifts from trucks when there was no sign of assistance from SA Roadlink.

The passenger said, “SA Roadlink’s service is pathetic. There are people who rely on their services to go to work or various places on time. I am greatly disappointed.”

An SA Roadlink spokesperson said they had arranged for a mechanic to attend to the problem and had no further comment.

Over an hour later, the passenger told The Witness, no mechanic had arrived on the scene and the bus was pushed to a nearby Engen garage where passengers were notified they would have to wait for about three hours for a bus to arrive from Durban.

It was already dark, and passengers expressed concern about the availability of public transport at night once they had reached their destination.
