SA Schools squad chosen

2012-07-31 00:00

ALL four of the Kwazulu-Natal players that were at the SA Schools trials on Saturday have been included in the SA Schools 28-player strong squad to take on England, France and Wales during August.

It must be a record for Kearsney, with three boys selected — centre Sandile Khubeka, and forward twins Daniel and Jean-Luc du Preez, who have all been stand-out players for their school during the rugby season. Only Affies have more players with four in the squad. Maritzburg College fullback Jesse Kriel started today’s trials held in Kempton Park as a firm favourite to make the cut, after leaving a huge impression at Craven Week, where he was one of the players of the tournament. All four have done exceptionally well to earn places, considering the wealth of talent they had to compete against at the trials.

The Blue Bulls have a tally of nine, including the four Affies boys in the squad. This also includes the captain, prop Pierre Schoeman. Western Province and Boland each have three representatives. The latter includes Handre Pollard from Paarl Gym, who played for the SA team in the recently held Under 20 World Cup, and he is the vice captain. The unbeaten Eastern Province Craven Week team has two players, both from Grey HS as well as two from SWD. Border, Pumas, Limpopo Bulls and Craven Week finalists, the Golden Lions, all have one player apiece. There is also only one Free Stater in the squad, but not from Grey College. This is the first time since 1996 that there has been an SA Schools team without a single Grey Bloem player in it.Waterkloof and Paarl Gym also have two representatives

The notable omissions from the squad include the Monnas trio of Jaco van der Walt (SA Schools 2011), Stefan Vermeulen (SA Academy 2011) and Lions captain Chris Massyn.

St Alban’s lock Abongile Nonkontwana is still in line to make history as the first non-Craven Week attendee to be selected for SA Schools. According to new rules introduced this year, players could be selected for SA Schools without playing at Craven Week, but players will only be awarded SA Schools colours if they play for the team. With the three scheduled matches, the management will likely try to include the whole squad.
