SA U18 superior against France

2012-08-14 00:00

THE South African U18 rugby side played their first Test in the Boland at Hugenote High School last Friday, against France, winning the game 17-7.

The forwards set a solid platform and kept the backs on the front foot. The longer the match progressed, the better the South Africans combined, but they were too intent on swinging the ball instead of slowing the game and working to maintain possession through more phases. The French had to put in many tackles, however, as South Africa attacked the tryline, but mistakes prevented them from scoring.

It could not have been a better start for the locals as the first try was scored after just three minutes, when wing Sergeal Petersen (Grey HS) used his considerable pace to surprise the French to dot down. Handre Pollard (Paarl Gym), the most experienced player in the side after playing in the U20 World Cup recently, added the extra points for a 7-0 lead.

The more experienced French team, with a number of matches behind them, pressed hard and hooker Romain Ruffenach, in a flurry of forwards, was driven over and after a successful conversion, the sides changed over both on seven points.

South Africa started the second half as they did the first, and, from the kick-off, kept the ball away from France, ending with prop Dayan van der Westhuizen (Centurion) barging over in the third minute.

With two minutes remaining centre Rohan Janse van Rensburg (Waterkloof), who throughout had combined well with Petersen, went over close to the corner to give SA their 17 points.

This afternoon they will play Wales who lost 25-28 against England last Thursday.
