SA amateur golf’s Royal Durban now Glacier SA Amateur Championship

2008-02-20 00:00

SA Amateur golf has a new sponsor for its matchplay championships and first off in the new three-year roster is Royal Durban from March 2 to 7.

The sponsorship comes from Glacier, a financial services company within the Sanlam group that has agreed to the new deal, in which it has taken the naming rights to the country’s premier amateur championship.

For the next three years, this will be known as the Glacier SA Amateur Golf Championship.

The first even at Royal Durban comprises a 36-hole stroke play qualifier, in which 168 players will compete. On conclusion of the qualifier, the leading 64 players compete in match play to determine the 2008 Glacier SA Amateur Champion.

The company believes that, as sponsors, their support at this level will continue to encourage young up and coming golfers to continue striving to become world stars, like Ernie Els, Retief Goosen, Trevor Immelman and others.

On the playing front, Christian van der Merwe of Victoria Country Club continues to impress this season.

Over the weekend, in the Free State and Eastern Cape amateur championship at Schoeman Park, where the last round was abandoned because of bad weather, Van der Merwe slotted into fifth place on 213.

That was six shots behind winner Jacques Blaauw of Paarl. Van der Merwe had rounds of 72 67 and 72.

Nearer home, at Umdoni Park, the two Adrians, Hansen and Maree, combined to win the Papwa Sewgolum betterball championship after a count out against Lyle McNeill and Keith Forde. Both couples had 36- hole totals of 141.

Alisdair Muir and Sean Fenger, who had the best first round of 68, slumped to a second round of 75 to finish one stroke behind on 142.
