SA amateurs tee off

KZN will have five starters at the Glacier South African Amateur Matchplay golf championships at Royal Durban beginning today.

They are Calvin Coelho, who will have the advantage of playing on his home course, Mark Cox (Kloof), Ryan de Beer and Jared Harvey, both of whom will also be playing on familiar territory at Royal, and Mark Hopf of Bluff National Park.

Christiaan der Merwe of Victoria Country Club hopes to join them, as one of the players tied on 154 who will have to take part in a sudden-death play-off early today.

With the SA Amateur strokeplay and matchplay championships split as from this year, the Proudfoot Trophy for the best 36 holes qualifying score has been won by Louis Calitz of Schoeman Park.

Calitz finished on 141 which was one shot clear of his rivals.

In joint fourth spot amongst the matchplay nominees were Derik Ferreira from Centurion and Durban’s Coelho.

Coelho had emerged from the 36 holes qualifying stage on Sunday and yesterday with a one under par 143, after a level second round of 72 to go with his one under first round total.

He had set out to play steady golf, and started with seven pars.

Three birdies from four holes had him on target for a possible 68, and a shot at winning the Proudfoot Trophy as the leading strokeplay qualifier.

But two blemishes in three holes in sight of home saw him lose that chance. Nonetheless he was delighted to have made the cut.

The teams event was won by Wales, followed by Germany with South Africa third.
