SA at the top of the ‘Happiness List’

2014-03-22 00:00

ACCORDING to a recent analysis, South African Instagramers are the happiest in Africa and top ranked in the world.

To celebrate the second-annual International Day of Happiness earlier this week, Jetpac, the company behind the social travel guide app, revealed the happiest countries and continents in the world.

The analysis was done according to new “geo-parsing” technology that can analyse people’s smiles on the photo-sharing social networking app. The analysis compares the size of people’s smiles with a “smile score” and the bigger the smile the higher the points will be.

After analysing over 150 million Instagram photos to produce city guides for over 6 000 cities in its iPhone app, Jetpac City image processing shows that South Africa is one of the happiest countries in the world with one of the highest “smile scores”, a value based on the average size of smiles in photos.

These findings are in connection with the release of Jetpac City Guides, a new iPhone app that curates Instagram’s big data to help users find everything from the top bars with women wearing lipstick to coffee shops full of moustached men.

The app, which recently launched, gives a new take on today’s digital city guides, using big data imaging rather than user reviews.

South Africa featured at number 18 on a list of over 120 countries and was above countries such as the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand.

South American countries dominated with Brazil at number one, followed by Nicaragua and Columbia, at two and three respectively.
