SA foundation to aid displaced Syrians

2013-08-28 00:00

THE ongoing conflict in Syria has left millions of people displaced and desperate for safe havens. While some seek refuge beyond the borders of the country, not everyone is able to do so.

South Africa’s Al-Imdaad Foundation has embarked on a mission to build a containerised village that will house hundreds of internally displaced families in an effort to provide them with basic needs like food, shelter and proper sanitation.

The foundation is a South African registered NGO that operates in 65 countries and is based in Estcourt.

As a humanitarian aid relief organisation, they try to help those in crisis and non-crisis situations around the world. They have been working in Syria with refugees on the Turkey and Jordan borders since the uprising began in 2011. They currently have an eight-member team working in the country.

In June this year the foundation initiated the village project, which will house hundreds of orphans and needy families in north-western Syria.

Each family dwelling in the village will receive a container home.
