SA golden girl graces Midmar Mile

2008-02-11 00:00

For SABC 3 presenter and Jacaranda FM DJ Liezl van der Westhuizen, the Midmar Mile is certainly one of those “can’t miss” events.

Van der Westhuizen left her Johannesburg home at 3.30 am yesterday morning and arrived in Pietermaritzburg at 8.30 am to swim the main women’s race for the third time after getting absolutely no sleep the previous night.

Van der Westhuizen described this year as being “more challenging than previous years,” due to the choppiness and cold temperature of the water, but added that the support from other swimmers was very encouraging.

“We started chatting to each other almost as soon as we jumped into the dam, and chatted and cheered each other on till the finish,” she laughed. She said that at one point a lifeguard told them to “chat less and swim more”.

Van der Westhuizen (29), who comes from a family of swimmers and runners, said that second to her family, maintaining a healthy lifestyle — which includes at least five cardio sessions in the gym a week and a healthy eating regime — takes top priority.

The bubbly, motivated and driven Van der Westhuizen said her success in the water, on radio and TV are hugely due to the very strong belief that she has in herself and making her dreams become a reality and also because of the support she gets from her close-knit family.

Her message to anyone with an aspiration to achieve their dreams would be to “believe in themselves and to never give up”.
