JOHANNESBURG — The South African Athletics team added five gold medals to their tally on day two of the athletics programme at Zone Six Games on Wednesday in Lusaka, Zambia.

Akani Simbini added gold in the 200 m to the one he won in the 100 m, while the promising Thapelo Madiba looks set to join the rich heritage of South African 800 m runners, after winning his event. The irrepressible Thato Makhafola put her fall at the World Junior Championships behind her to win the women’s 800 m.

In the women’s shot put, Lezaan Jordaan, a finalist at the World Junior Championships, although she is still only a youth athlete, added the gold medal to her already impressive CV. Mpho Maphuta put a run of injuries over the past two years to win the long jump.

In the men’s javelin, World Youth Champion Reinhard van Zyl showed that he is recovering from an injury that kept him out for most of this year when he took the silver medal.

University of Johannesburg student Chante van Tonder added the 200 m silver medal to her 100 m gold.
