SA men’s hockey team run Germany down

2009-03-18 00:00

GERMANY were given a fright by South Africa in the most recent Test match in the men’s hockey series in Bloemfontein.

The Olympic Games and World Cup champions were a goal down inside the first 10 minutes after a Gareth Carr drag flick. Germany equalised via a deflection goal and the teams turned around with the score 1-1.

The Germans went 3-1 up before KZN Coastal’s Carr, felt by many to have been unlucky not to have made the SA team for the Beijing Olympics six months ago, pulled one back with a fine solo effort from the left half position.

Then it was the turn of Julian Hykes to net the equaliser as SA increased the pressure on the surprised Germans, but the world’s best team proved their pedigree when they needed to, and slotted the winner.

The SA U21 squad have also been in Bloemfontein preparing for the forthcoming Junior World Cup in Malaysia, but found themselves no match for the senior national team in a 5-0 defeat.

The SA seniors, led by Western Province’s Austin Smith, were 1-0 ahead at the break thanks to Smith’s provincial and national team-mate Adam Wilson, while the in-form Carr and Hykes of Border bagged a brace apiece in the second half.

Earlier Test results: Germany 6 SA 1; Russia 0 SA 4; Russia 3 SA U21 2.
