SA movie wins top award at Zanzibar Film Festival

UHLANGA — The Mark scooped five awards at the Zanzibar International Film Festival on Sunday.

Award-winning author and playwright, Ndaba ka-Ngwane, who produced the movie said they did not expect to win and that this was an exciting experience for everyone involved.

“Initially there was shock and then there was excitement.We were jumping and crying because of all the excitement. There was tough competition. There were very good movies from everywhere.”

The movie won the Ziff Golden Door Award for Best feature, which is the overall award at the festival. They also received an award for Best Actress which went to two of their cast members, Nomfundo Dubazana and Thuli Khumalo. The movie also walked away with three international awards for Best African Film — the Verona Jury Award from Italy, Signis Jury Award from Belgium and Osembene Award from Scottland. They also qualified for other international movie festivals and one of them will be in Italy in November.

Ka-Ngwane said he heard good remarks about the movie at the festival.

He told The Witness: “They said the storyline was powerful and were impressed with the originality and cinematography. They were very surprised to know that this was our first movie.”

The movie follows three young rural teenagers through their daily struggles, with prejudice, poverty, abuse and their triumphs reflected as they keep their heads up in the face of the death and destruction around them.

Uhlanga — The Mark will also be taking part in the Durban Film Festival.
