SA music awards: Newcomers dominate nominations

NEWCOMERS dominated the nominations for this year’s MTN South African Music Awards (Samas), announced at the Turbine Hall in Newtown yesterday.

Pop sensation Toya Delazy’s album Due Drop Deluxe received six nominations, including newcomer of the year, best pop album, record of the year, best producer with Jax Panik and two nominations for remix of the year, with Pascal & Pearce and ClassyMenace.

Hot on her heels is another rising star, ChianoSky, with five nominations from her debut album Hungry, including record of the year and best producer with Crighton Goodwill.

With four nominations each are Johannesburg sensations The Muffinz, who will be performing at the Splashy Fen festival in Underberg on the Easter weekend, DJ Vetkuk vs Mahoota and Cape Town-based all-girl group BlackByrd.

In the album of the year category, Kelly Khumalo, Khuli Chana, Maleh, Ntokozo Mbambo and The Muffinz are nominated.

Delazy, who is the grand-daughter of IFP leader Chief Mangosuthu Buthelezi, is up against The Muffinz, Tailor, Bongeziwe Mabandla and last year’s Idols winner, Khaya Mthethwa, of Durban, for the

newcomer of the year title.

KwaZulu-Natal artists celebrating nominations include gospel singer Ntokozo Mbambo, Idols runner-up Lloyd Cele for No Limits, kwaito stars Bhar, L’Vovo Derrango and Professor for best kwaito album.

DJ Black Coffee is up for best dance album; Hlengiwe Mhlaba and Thulile Mbili for best traditional faith music album; Shabalala Rhythm and Soul Brothers for best traditional album; Ichwane Lebhaca, Imithente, Phuzekhemisi and Zero Khumalo for best maskandi album and Steve Dyer for best jazz.

Guy Buttery (To Disappear In Place) and Buttery and Nibs van der Spuy (In The Shade of the Wild Fig) got nominations for best classic and instrumental album category.

Gangs of Ballet’s beautiful video for Hello Sweet World was recognised in the best music video of the year section, in which its creator, Salomon Ligthelm is nominated.

Among the contenders in the MTN Sama Record of the Year category are: B.O.P for Wa

Muhle; Black Motion for Father To Be; Chiano-Sky for Walking Away; DJ Vetkuk vs Mahoota for Stokvel; DJ Zinhle for My Name Is; Donald for I Deserve.
