SA prisoners will get to ‘feel it’ too

2010-06-11 00:00

THE Correctional Services Department has confirmed that prisoners around the country will be able to feel the spirit of the 2010 Fifa World Cup, which begins today.

The news came from the Department’s spokesperson, Manelisi Wolela, who said that plans have been made to ensure that inmates will be able to watch televised coverage of the tournament.

“The department of Correctional Services will be beaming the games to nearly 6 000 monitors already available in correctional centres for inmates and offenders incarcerated in cells across the country,” he said.

“The department has also made provisions to provide alternative viewing facilities where some of the screens have been damaged, in order to provide free-to-air broadcasts of the 64 Fifa World Cup games, starting with South Africa and Mexico.”

Wolela added that the department is confident that it is ready to play its part in the successful hosting of the tournament.

There are an additional 3 800 centres that have been made available across the country that will be used to house inmates if current South African Police Force cells are overflowing.

These extra correctional centres will be located close to the World Cup stadiums around the country, said Wolela.
