SA rowers two weeks away from Big Apple

CAPE TOWN — The Americans must have though they were Cuban refugees or drug smugglers because when they paddled into the Miami harbour, a helicopter suddenly hovered over them while officers on two ski boats raced towards them.

“They wanted to know who we are and what we were doing. It was like a scene from Miami Vice or CSI Miami,” the adventurer Riaan Manser said on Sunday.

Manser and his girlfriend, Vasti Geldenhuys, an attorney from Cape Town, are rowing from Africa to New York. They had started their 10 765 km journey from Agadir in Morocco on December 15 and hope to be in New York in by month end.

Manster said the customs officers confiscated Vasti’s apples and bananas, but then the mayor of Miami and a large crowd made them feel welcome. Manser and Geldenhuys are the first people to row from Africa to North America.
