SA schools showcase skills at Founders’ Hockey Festival

2014-04-08 00:00

KEARSNEY College hosted the annual Founders’ Hockey Festival from March 29 to April 1, welcoming nine schools from around the country to showcase their skills on the Mason astro.

Joining Kearsney were Potchefstroom Boys’ High School, Dale College, Northwood, Affies, Glenwood, Paul Roos, Rondebosch, Parktown and St David’s.

Hockey was the overall winner of the festival and the spirit of sportsmanship was evident from the players who were fine ambassadors of their schools.

The festival has been providing an opportunity for fresh schoolboy talent since 1982, when Fish Hoek were the hosts.

At that time, the only school hockey festival in the country was hosted by York High School in George, and thanks to Des Donald (Brebner) and Mike Eddy (Fish Hoek), Founders’ Hockey Festival was born.

At that time, April 6 was a public holiday, hence the name of the festival, with eight teams participating.

Five core schools could be considered the pioneers of the festival — Fish Hoek, Brebner, Potch Boys’, SACS and Dale College. More schools were added through the years, Kearsney being one of them.

Potch have attended 31 festivals and Dale 30. When it comes to hosting, Dale have six to their name, with Potch four, Northwood three and Parktown three.

Venues are rotated every year, with Dale able to be hosts in their 150th year.

Paul Roos hosted the 25th Founders’ in 2006, where former SA women’s hockey captain and hand-eye co-ordination specialist Sherylle Calder, currently part of the Sharks set-up, was guest speaker at the formal dinner.

This year, the hosts enjoyed a consistent tournament, losing their only game to Affies 2-3. A full programme of matches kept spectators interested throughout all four days and milestones were reached by Kearsney’s Bill Ntuli and Ru Baker who notched up their 50th caps for their school’s first team against Rondebosch Boys’ and Affies.
