SA soon to view local naked news

2010-05-01 00:00

A NEWS channel to be launched on May 7 will reveal the bare facts to keep you abreast of the latest news.

South African viewers will be able to see a local version of a nude news channel where the anchors shed their clothes while reporting on top stories. At present, South Africans can gain access to the worldwide channel, Naked News, via cellphones and the Internet.

But, from May 7, a locally produced version of the show will be launched, according to City Press, a sister newspaper to The Witness.

The stripping news presenters of Naked News report daily on news, sport and entertainment, and the service is accessible via your cellphone at R10 a week.

City Press reports that a total of 50 aspiring South African newsreaders have already auditioned to bare all and expose the truth, although only female news readers are being hired at present.

While many subscribers look forward to the launch, other organisations say that Naked News will just add to the negative stereotyping of women.

Errol Naidoo, director of the Family Policy Institute, said: “Naked News is a cheap and puerile attempt at legitimising the sexual exploitation of women.”

Naidoo added that using naked women to read the news “should be a criminal offence in a country where the rape and sexual abuse of women and children are epidemic”.

The Family Policy Institute has called on government and the Film and Publication Board to “urgently investigate Naked News’ compliance with adult content regulations”.
