SABC managers get bonuses

2014-08-04 00:00

MIDDLE-LEVEL managers at the SABC on Friday got an extra month’s salary, presumably on insistence from the COO Hlaudi Motsoeneng.

The Sunday Independent newspaper reported that other employees at the SABC received a bonus of R8 000 as reward for their hard work during the soccer World Cup in 2010 and the death of former president Nelson Mandela.

Motsoeneng also reportedly suggested managers at the SABC offices in Auckland Park should receive bonuses of R100 000.

Motsoeneng boasted in February that the SABC has R1 billion in the bank.

SABC spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago said the payments were not bonuses, but ex-gratia payments to thank staff for their hard work.

Kganyago said managers had not been paid bonuses for the past five years.

The SABC has, however, paid about R2,4 million in bonuses in the 2012/2013 book year.

Senior manager Anton Heunis received R1,7 million and Bessie Tugwana, former manager of SABC2, received R338 000.

The national treasury said the SABC’s profit has dropped by 156% points from 2010/2011 to 2013/2014.
