SABC staff told not to call JZ’s home ‘Zumaville’

2012-11-07 00:00

THE SABC has told its news personnel to stop referring to President Jacob Zuma’s house as “Zumaville” and not to use “imported terminology” like “Nkandlagate”.

In an e-mail to staff, Jimi Matthews, acting group chief and head of news and actuality, wrote: “You are hereby notified that, with immediate effect, President Zuma’s Nkandla home should be referred to as the President’s, or Mr Zuma’s, ‘Nkandla residence’, and not a ‘compound’ or ‘homestead’ or any other such term.

“Please also refrain from using imported terminology in reporting on the controversy surrounding the infrastructural development around the residence, such as ‘Nkandlagate’, ‘Zumaville’ and such like.”

DA MP Marian Shinn, spokesperson on communications, said the e-mail shows the SABC is being drawn into the ANC’s struggles ahead of the Mangaung conference.

The issue was debated on Twitter yesterday after SAfm apologised for calling the residence a “compound”.
