SABC: woman didn’t tell us her mother had died

2013-02-06 00:00

THE Pretoria woman who claimed to have been waging a 15-year battle to get the SABC to stop charging her deceased mother for a TV licence, only reported the death to the broadcaster seven months ago.

“Information provided by Mrs van Zyl about her mother’s TV licence is wrong,” spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago said yesterday.

Elizabeth van Zyl said earlier that although her mother died in 1998, she had received numerous renewal notices for the licence.

She said she wrote a “nice letter” at the time.

Kganyago said the SABC database has no record before June 2012 that the mother had died.

“An e-mail from Mrs van Zyl informing the SABC of her mother’s death in August 1998 was received on June 28, 2012.” The SABC confirmed the death with Home Affairs and cancelled the licence a month later. However, Van Zyl was never informed of this, Kganyago said, apologising for this oversight.
