SANI2c: Biggest mountain bike stage race start today

2010-03-03 00:00

THE world’s biggest mountain bike stage race is set to begin in Underberg today.

The sixth annual Subaru Sani2c, deemed South Africa’s most popular cycle race, will see 1 500 cyclists make their way from Underberg to Scottburgh over three days.

The race is split in two — the Sani2c and Sani2c Adventure.

The Sani2c Adventure begins today, and will see celebrities like Jonty Rhodes and his brother Clinton cycle the single-track route to the coast.

The Sani2c race will begin tomorrow, with cyclists vying to complete the three-day race in the best possible time.

Kevin Evans, who was part of last year’s winning team, has joined forces with Austria’s Alban Lakata in the hope of winning this year’s Sani2c.

Each race follows the same 271 km course, a route that organiser Craig Wapnick describes as “absolutely amazing”.

“The Sani2c has become well known for its long stretches of single track, which have basically been carved out of the mountainside,” he says.

The race passes through rural areas and, as a result, has given locals the opportunity to generate funds off the event.

Wapnick says the local residents will help with logistical operations such as course preparation, bike washing, seconding tables and catering.

Since Sani2c covers any costs that are incurred by these activities, and pays the beneficiaries for their time and effort, the locals are highly motivated and passionate about the success of the event, he says.

The Sani2c Adventure will end on Friday and the Sani2c on Saturday on Scottburgh’s main beach.
