SAVF Old Age Home without electricity for days

2013-12-16 00:00

THE SAVF Old Age Home in Prince Alfred Street was without electricity for three days last week. Power was only restored on Friday afternoon and by then, all their “Christmas food had gone off”.

The electricity problem started on Wednesday night and last week they decided to call The Witness with the hope that the municipality’s electricity department would resolve their outage, which affected the pensioners’ daily routine.

Mariana Bothma from the home said that all their food had gone off and as they take care of frail people that are wheelchair-bound, it was difficult to get them to move around with the lifts not working.

The residents at the home watch television and listen to the radio for entertainment and it is hard to keep them happy without electricity. “We had to make alternative solutions to feed them. They were sitting in the dark and they have to take cold baths as old as they are,” said Bothma. She said they would need to do Christmas grocery shopping all over again, which was unfair since the home is short of funds.

She said the home cannot afford a stand-by generator, and the residents at their age cannot light candles because of safety hazards.

Msunduzi Municipal electricity department’s management called upon their customers to take down registration number plates if they receive unsatisfactory services so that officials can follow up and take appropriate measures in dealing with the problem.

The electricity problem was fixed on Friday and municipal spokesperson Brian Zuma said he would look into the matter, as he was not aware that the home had been in the dark.

The call centre contact number is: 080 000 1868.
