SA’s best lamb breeders for Royal

2010-05-26 00:00

ABOUT 500 sheep have been entered for prizes in the Royal Agricultural Show.

The head of the section, Mike Moncur, reports that entries on the stud animal side are “way up on last year” and that some of the country’s best breeders of fat lambs will be showing.

This year’s show will also play host to two national sheep championships for the Suffolk and Hampshire Down breeds. Other breeds taking part are Border Leicester, Damara, Dormer, Ile de France, Merino and Dorper.

Judging in the sheep classes gets under way on May 30 and finishes on June 1 with the interbreed classes and the announcement of the supreme champions.

“Personally, I feel this year’s Royal [Show] is going to be one of the best we’ve had in many years,” Moncur said.

• This year’s Sheep and Wool Expo, which takes place opposite the sheep pens, will be hosting fashion shows, sheep shearing and exhibitors selling everything from jerseys to lamb chops.

At the fashion shows, which will take place at 11 am, 1 pm and 3 pm from May 28 to May 30 and on June 4 and 5, visitors will see the latest yarns and garments from Saprotex International, which are made using Elle yarns.
