SPCA rescues trapped cow from manhole

2010-03-26 00:00

The SPCA used an army cargo net to hoist a cow from an uncovered manhole in Bakerville Heights yesterday.

Residents on Mattison Drive said the fully-grown black cow fell into the hole at around 11am yesterday morning.

Men tending to the cattle, which graze on the grassy embankment on Mattison Drive, tried in vain to lift the trapped animal.

Resident Fatima Oumar said the men tried for over an hour, but in vain. “I called the SPCA because I could see they weren’t going to get the cow out. They wouldn’t have managed without the SPCA,” she said.

SPCA senior inspector Alec Wylie arrived on the scene just after 2 pm. “When I got there I knew we would need more manpower to help this animal,” he said. “I sent for backup of three vehicles and we used a harness the army had given us to lift the cow.”

Wylie said that with the help of the men who were tending the cattle, lifting the cow from the hole became easier.

Once out of the hole, the animal was unable to walk; it tried to pick itself up numerous times before its tired back legs gave in.

The cow’s owner, who gave his name as D.S.D. Tshabalala, chose to have his private vet tend to the cow.

Wylie said the SPCA had suggested painkillers, antibiotics and a vitamin B12 shot for the animal.

“The most important thing is to get the animal to stand on its own feet again,” he said.

Oumar said hundreds of cows graze on the roadside daily, and while residents have complained to the council, it has done “little or nothing” to clear away rubbish from the bushes or even replace missing manhole covers.
