SPCA to host day of fun for dogs and owners at Midmar dam

2009-09-15 00:00

THE SPCA has organised a new and an exciting animal welfare initiative in the KwaZulu-Natal midlands.

Scheduled for October 11, the Hill’s Thousand Paws Walk For SPCA will see the Umngeni SPCA teaming up with Pietermaritzburg and Mooi River branches to arrange a day out for families and their dogs at the picturesque country setting of Midmar Dam.

Whether fluffy or short-haired, mongrel or pure-bred, fat or thin, short or leggy, the four-legged creatures and their owners can partake in scenic walks tailored for all levels of fitness.

That will include an “easy” 1,5 km stroll for the old- timers or a more engaging 2,5 km route for the young and the restless.

Those four-legged couch potatoes who may be allergic to exercise will be entertained with their masters and mistresses at various doggy demos, stalls and food courts, which promise to suit all tastes. Or they can simply look forward to a relaxing day on the shores of the dam.

The first 300 dogs to register on the day are in for a special treat.

Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife will charge R25 for every vehicle entry to the park, while the SPCA will charge R10 per head whether on four feet or on two.

For children under six it’s free.

While registration is only on the day, organisers have asked for prospective participants to give an indication of how many people will be coming for catering purposes. E-mail adrienne.o@mweb.co.za or call 033 330 6267 or 083 636 0891.

To raise funds for the SPCA, collect sponsorship forms at Umngeni SPCA or call 033 330 6276; for Pietermaritzburg SPCA call 033 386 9267/8/9; for Mooi River and district SPCA call Margie at 082 255 8463.

For information about acquiring a stall, call Mary at 033 330 2405/072 925 9989.
