SRC launches ‘I Care UKZN’ campaign to collect funds

2015-02-24 00:00

THE University of KwaZulu-Natal’s Student Representative Council (SRC) has launched an “I Care UKZN” campaign to help gather money for students needing university funds.

The SRC has pledged to sacrifice a certain amount of its own budget in challenging students, staff and management to donate money to “ensure that everyone who is eligible for funding gets funding or gets registered at most”.

“We humbly request students to donate R100, staff to donate at least R200 and executives, directors and managers to donate at least R400. Please note the stipulated amounts are a minimum and donors are welcome to donate as much as possible,” said SRC president general Dithobe Mosana.

According to a communiqué sent out by the SRC, university management has raised more than R10 million for a 70% sponsorship of overall fees including tuition, residence, meals and book allowances for 1 100 students.

According to the SRC, they proposed that students with outstanding debts which were financially excluded last year be allowed to pay 30% of their debt in order to register this year.

University management, according to the SRC, declined the request and upheld the 65% it had already established.

A spokesperson for the university said they would respond today.
