SWD pip KZN Inland

2008-02-11 00:00

KZN Inland came agonisingly close to registering their first win of the season yesterday, writes JONATHAN COOK.

South Western Districts beat Inland by a nail biting three runs in the SA Airways Provincial Challenge 45-over match at the Maritzburg Oval. And, ironically, it was a man from Wartburg who played a starring role in SWD’s victory.

Rudy Hillerman, now studying in George, scored an unbeaten 45 in SWD’s 193 for seven before capturing four Inland wickets for 28 runs as the home side ended on 190/9 in their quota of 45 overs.

In the three-day match that finished on Saturday, an admirable attempt was made to keep the game alive after Friday’s second day was washed out.

In reply to SWD’s 315 for six, Inland declared their first innings on the first day’s overnight total of 25 without loss. SWD then declared their second innings closed at 45 for three, leaving Inland 336 to win. Matters did not go Inland’s way, but they did manage to hang on for a draw at a precarious 148 for nine. This was largely due to Kivershan Padayachee and Lyndon Brown, who both played gutsy innings in the face of a penetrative SWD attack revelling in the bowler-friendly conditions.

One-day: SWD 193/7 in 45 overs (Nigel Brouwers 42, Rudy Hillerman 45*; Morne van Vuuren 2-40, Andre van Vuuren 2-51). KZN Inland 190/9 in 45 overs (Kivershan Padayachee 37, Morne van Vuuren 31, Mbasa Gqadushe 44*; Rudy Hillerman 4-28, Bardo Fransman 2-28). SWD won by 3 runs.

Three-day: SWD 1st innings 315/6. Inland 1st inn 25/0 declared. SWD 2nd inn 45/3 dec (Qasim Khurshid 2-23). Inland 2nd inn 148/9 (Kivershan Padayachee 43, Lyndon Brown 46*; Bardo Fransman 2-31, Rudy Hillerman 2-39, Nigel Brouwers 2-14, Nathan Murray 2-22). Match drawn.
