Sable antelope bull sold for record R12,2 million

A SABLE antelope bull was sold for a record R12,2 million at a game auction in Gravelotte in Limpopo on Saturday.

The eight-year-old antelope, called Charlie, was bred by

Piet Warren, a well-known personality in game circles.

Warren, who owns farms in the Gravelotte district, sold 58 sable antelope for a massive R87,9 million on Saturday.

“I’m still suffering from shock. It’s going very, very well,” a laughing Warren said yesterday.

Charlie is from a pure

Zambian bloodline.

Piet du Toit, who paid R26 million for a buffalo at a game auction outside Bela-Bela (Warmbad) a week ago, is one of Charlie’s new owners.

Du Toit and three of his partners bought the animal, whose horns measure 127 cm.

Vleissentraal-Bosveld auctioneer Willie Roux said the previous record price for a

sable antelope was R3 million. That was about four years ago and it was also one of Warren’s animals.

“I never dreamt that the animals would sell for so much,” Warren said.

Roux said Warren was a master when it came to breeding sable antelope. Warren decided a few years ago to specialise in the breeding of the animals with a view to ensuring longer horns. He has already had a bull with 134 cm horns.

Warrned said the antelope were being shot at the rate of about 50 a year until 2000. The smaller the antelope populations became in countries like Zimbabwe and Zambia, the less they were hunted. People had started realising how rare the species was.

Some of the other sable antelope sold on Saturday fetched up to R5 million each. They are much sought-after by foreign hunters.
