Sad loss to patrons as much loved barman is killed in accident

THE Hilton pub community was left in shock this weekend following news that one of their most popular barmen had been killed in a car crash.

Justice Xulu (45) was killed in an accident on Sweetwaters Road at around 10 am on Saturday morning. He had been employed as the head barman at the Pot and Barrel Pub at Rotunda in Cedara for the past two years.

Prior to that, he had worked for several other establishments in the area.

His boss Bruce Lourens told The Witness they were devastated by the loss. “I’ve known him for 14 to 15 years … He was a friend, a colleague, someone we worked along with — not just as an employee but a colleague.”

He described him as a popular individual who was well liked by all those around him. “Wherever he worked people liked coming there, because of the personality he was and the atmosphere that he created around him.”

Of the accident, he said he understood that Xulu may have overtaken in the wrong place and could not get back to his lane fast enough, leading to the accident. He said his son had been in the car with him at the time.

Darrel Lourens said Xulu had left a legacy of good customer service that had made him popular.

“In the two years that he has been with us, he has trained other barmen that will continue his legacy of good customer service.” Darrel said that on Tuesday, they will be hosting a memorial service for Xulu at the pub from 4 pm onwards.

Adrian McWilliams, who had also worked with Xulu, said he had looked after his pub patrons tirelessly and had worked very hard.

“He was a fantastic guy who was well respected among the Hilton locals for many years.”

On the Pot and Barrel Facebook page Sarah Munro wrote that Justice was “such a wonderful man. He really will be missed. Maybe we could put a photo of him up in the corner by the fireplace and call it Justice’s corner? Then we can still drink with him. X”

Colleen Haamerslag Kunst wrote “RIP … My friend! I’m sure you’ll be truly missed by all”

Jackie Cameron said his death was a great loss. “I am deeply saddened to hear this … From Hilton Hotel days to Pot days — he is an institution!”
