Saddling up: cyclists make PMB

2008-06-26 00:00

The eight South African and Irish cyclists who have cycled the continent were hosted at a welcoming function at the Victoria Country Club last night. Their quest is to raise funds for charity along the way and they arrived in the capital with R1,5 million already collected.

South Africans Gareth Brauteseth, Didi Francis, Grant McDermott and three Irishmen — Ollie Fegan, Denis Dwyer and Niall Treacy — began their journey in Cairo, while South Africans Richard Conyngham and Matthew Eb joined the group at Arusha in Tanzania.

Last night’s function, hosted by fellow cyclists, is a precursor to the group cycling from Nottingham Road to Pietermaritzburg tomorrow. Cyclists and members of the public are welcome to join the group on this journey from Gowrie Farm clubhouse leaving at 9 am. There will be a presentation by the group at the Royal Showgrounds at 3 pm.
