Safe City CCTV zooms in, robbers bust

THE attempts of two robbers to make off with a woman’s cellphone yesterday afternoon in the Pietermaritzburg CBD were thwarted after the CCTV operators at Safe City spotted the incident on camera.

Police spokesperson Colonel Jay Naicker said that the 33-year-old woman was entering an office off Church Street in the CBD when she was approached by two men, one armed with a knife.

“The men allegedly grabbed the victim and pushed her against a wall and demanded her handbag. When she refused to hand her bag over she was allegedly stabbed once on her left hand by the suspect.”

Naicker said the robber with the knife then allegedly placed the knife against the woman’s stomach, threatened her and attempted to pull her handbag out of her hands.

Naicker said she screamed for help, alerting others. The robbers grabbed her cellphone and fled. Her cellphone was recovered a short distance away from where the incident occurred.

“Members from the Safe City CCTV Control room spotted the incident … and immediately informed the police.”

He said Pietermaritzburg flying squad officers who were patrolling the area were alerted and given a description of the suspects and the direction they were fleeing in.

He said they immediately responded and arrested both suspects a short while later in the CBD.
