Safe City crew help to catch muggers

TWO men are to appear in court after they were arrested when the robbery they committed was picked up by operators manning the city’s camera system at the Safe City project.

On Thursday night last week, the two men grabbed Bongani Latha (33), as he walked along Retief Street towards his home in Hanniville. They threw him to the ground, assaulting him and taking his wallet with R250 from his trouser pocket, before fleeing on foot.

“Members from the CCTV control room noticed the incident, and saw the suspects running along Pietermaritz Street. They immediately informed the police, who arrested both suspects in Gynman Lane in the CBD,” said police spokesperson Senior Superintendent Henry Budhram.

Budhram said the men were positively identified by Latha, whose wallet, which was found in one of the suspect’s possession, was returned.

The arrested suspects, both aged 20, will appear in court shortly on charges of robbery.
